The ribbons, the street

Public intervention at The Straight Street in Damascus, Syria, 2006

This intervention was part of Here as the Centre of the World project, a research and culture exchanging platform for young artists from Beirut (Lebanon), Damascus (Syria), Diyarbakir (Turkey), Enschede (The Netherlands), Khartoum (Sudan) and Tai Wan.

The Straight Street is the largest market at the center of Damascus. As one of the venue of Here As The Center Of The World its surrounding was in rich of historical ruins and ancient monumental architectures. It was one of the few markets that remained the traditional trading method and its original atmosphere.

I bound blue ribbons on abandoned objects that I found interesting at The Straight Street as an intervention. The ribbons stayed and decayed until 2008 when this area have been renovated into a modern look shopping district by the local authority.
